PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The DS18B20 is a digital temperature sensor that can communicate over a 1-Wire bus, which means it requires only one data line (and ground) for communication with a microcontroller. One of the features of the DS18B20 is that it can be powered in two different ways: conventional power mode and parasite power mode.


In conventional power mode, the DS18B20 is powered through an external power supply connected to its VDD pin, and the 1-Wire bus is used solely for communication.

In parasite power mode, the DS18B20 does not require a separate power supply connected to its VDD pin. Instead, it derives the power it needs from the 1-Wire bus itself. This is achieved by using the data line to provide power to the device during periods when the bus is idle (i.e., when the data line is held high). The DS18B20 has an internal capacitor that stores charge when the data line is high, and this stored energy is used to power the device when the data line is low (during communication).

Parasite power mode is useful in situations where it is difficult or impractical to run a separate power line to the sensor, such as in remote or hard-to-reach locations. However, there are some limitations to using parasite power mode:

1. The number of devices on the 1-Wire bus may be limited because each device adds to the total power demand on the bus.
2. The communication speed may need to be reduced to ensure that the DS18B20 has enough time to charge its internal capacitor.
3. Strong pull-up may be required on the 1-Wire bus to ensure that enough current is available to power the device during temperature conversions and EEPROM writes.

When using parasite power mode, it is important to follow the timing and electrical specifications provided in the DS18B20 datasheet to ensure reliable operation.

Q: Where physically on the device does the temperature measurement take place?

A: The DS18B20 does not sense temperature directly through the package. For all package types, the DS18B20 senses temperature primarily through the GND pin. Ensuring a good thermal connection between the GND pin of the device and the heat source you wish to measure will provide the best results.

Q: Is there a way to extend the temperature range of the DS18B20?

A: No, there is not a way to increase the range it reads. The DS18B20 reads with an accuracy of ±0.5°C from -10°C to +85°C and ±2°C accuracy from -55°C to +125°C.

Q: Will a conformal coating affect the thermal response of the DS18B20?

A: A thin conformal coating will not affect the thermal response of the device.

Q: Using OneWireViewer, can more than one DS18B20 be logged?

A: Yes, every DS18B20 will have a file where you can store the data. Data will be received from one DS18B20 at a time.

Q: Can you power the DS18B20 from a 3V battery?

A: The DS18B20 can be powered from any source. Since batteries will dip in voltage, a nominal 3V battery may not always supply the minimum 3.0V the DS18B20 requires. We suggest a step-up voltage regulator is used to ensure the device is supplied within its rated voltage range of 3.0V to 5.5V.
